May Musicians

Peter Edelman

Peter Edelman is a Washington, DC–based jazz pianist who has been a vital presence on the city’s music scene for more than four decades. Known for a deeply soulful sound that is both electrifying and soothing, his playing reflects a profound emotional range and mastery of the jazz tradition. Raised in a highly musical household in Northern Virginia, Edelman was immersed in music from an early age.

His father was an avid jazz collector with an encyclopedic record library, while his mother was a classically trained pianist. He began playing the piano at age seven and quickly developed a natural affinity for the instrument, later remarking that he was drawn to jazz “more by osmosis than by choice.”

In the 1980s, Edelman secured a prestigious residency at the legendary Washington jazz club One Step Down and has since performed with many of the leading figures in jazz, earning his place among the region’s most respected musicians.
