Out of Darkness

Explore strength, beauty and resilience through black identity, social justice and shared history.

The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) is delighted to celebrate the opening of Out of Darkness with a public reception at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room on November 19, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Out of Darkness features works by artists Stéphane Calvin, Lauren Jackson, Sarah Matthews and Justyne Fischer.

Curated by Justyne Fischer, this exhibition celebrates the powerful work of four black female artists and their exploration of strength, beauty and resiliency through the lens of black identity, social justice and shared history. Through printmaking, wood-burning and mixed media, the artists tell stories of struggle, strength, adversity and triumph. Unified by bold imagery, text and collective ideas, this selection of work challenges stereotypes and racial bias.

Out of Darkness is a testament to the enduring human spirit and transformative power of art to challenge perceptions” says Suzan Jenkins, CEO of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. “These messages are timely considering the constant conflict in our world today, especially with the upcoming election. Out of Darkness invites us to reflect on historical shadows while shining a light on progress continuing to emerge. It celebrates unwavering strength that turns darkness into dawn.”

Out of Darkness will be on view 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. every Friday from November 1, 2024 – January 17, 2025. The opening reception is free and open to the public. Tickets can be reserved at: https://outofdarkness.eventbrite.com
